TFSA contribution room calculator

Figure out how much you can still put into your TFSA this year. The CRA’s number is authoritative — check it at CRA My Account — but this calculator usually matches it.

Fill in the four fields above to see your estimated room.

How TFSA room works

Your TFSA contribution room accumulates from age 18 onward (if you’ve been a Canadian resident continuously). The 2026 annual addition is $7,000. Unused room carries forward forever.

Withdrawals restore room — but not until the following calendar year. Withdrawing $5,000 today doesn’t free up room to re-contribute until January 1st of next year. Re- contributing in the same year as the withdrawal counts as an over-contribution, attracting a 1% per-month penalty.

What counts as a contribution

Every dollar you move from a non-TFSA account into a TFSA. Direct deposits to a TFSA savings account, deposits to a TFSA brokerage account, GIC purchases inside a TFSA — all contributions. Investment growth inside the TFSA is not a contribution.

What if I’m wrong?

The CRA’s system is the source of truth. If we say you have $X of room and the CRA says $Y, trust the CRA. Most discrepancies come from forgotten contributions, transfers between TFSAs at different institutions, or in-kind contributions you didn’t realize counted.
